Since the EU Health Commission announced its intention to update its Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) in December 2012, and subsequently learning that this would include regulation of electronic cigarettes, I’ve come to realise that I spent the first 45 years in a state of political naivety.
The gentleman in the picture is Dr. Tonio Borg. He’s a Maltese national with a doctorate in law and he became the EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy following the recent resignation of the previous incumbent John Dalli.

Following on from the inaugural meeting held on 6th April, a further meeting was held on Tuesday 12th April, but was unfortunately curtailed due to technical problems. The European Union, together with the World Health Organisation are conducting a consultation on the recreational use of nicotine, with a view to restricting or even banning the supply of e-liquids, amongst other nicotine containing products.
Except cigarettes of course….
