Not being a huge fan of either wood and/or box mods I largely dismissed the Touchwood when it appeared on the UK Vapers forum about six months ago as irrelevant.
When I “rediscovered” the Touchwood at Vapefest in October, it became apparent that as a would-be e-cig reviewer of worth, I simply need to pay more attention sometimes!
The Touchwood is obviously wooden, but it is no box-mod. It’s not a tube either, but an ingenious blend of the two concepts that just works from both functionally and visually.
Ian, from Touchwood, describes his wares as follows:
I came up with this design after 18 months or so of vaping. I started off as most people do with the standard mini e-cig but soon got frustrated by the short battery life and unreliable nature of these batteries.
My first box mod used a 3.7v AA battery and worked well-though it lacked the tactile qualities and didn’t look too pretty. After looking through the many forums I noticed that a favourite power supply for mods was two CR123 3V camera batteries-used in various tube style mods. I couldn’t find a battery box to take these side by side so I set about making my own out of a lump of wood-again not too pretty but worked brilliantly-and a few people asked if I could make one for them.
Being of an engineering background I decided that a few improvements were necessary to make it a saleable item and after a few months of development and investment have come up with the Touchwood, which I hope you’ll agree is both practical and attractive. It measures approximately 24mmx50mmx75mm(excluding cartomizer/atomizer) and so fits nicely in the palm of the hand making it ideal for everyday vaping. The one shown in the picture is made from Jarrah-an Australian hardwood, sometimes known as Australian Mahogony. The timber used here was an outback railway sleeper in a former life-so you can be sure it’s well seasoned. I shall be using other quality hardwoods in the future, all reclaimed, but for the moment this is the best I’ve found.
I won’t go into too many details of the batteries available etc as if you are reading this you are probably well versed in the finer points of vaping. If you have any questions feel free to email me. It has a standard 510 connector and can run on either one 3.7V plus a dummy battery or two 3V giving 6V for that extra hit-my preference! For the brave of heart you can use 2×3.7V but I would recommend only the use of high voltage/high resistance atomizers for this. Please note that although in the photos it is shown with a steel cartomizer fitted this is only to give an idea of what it will look like in use and is not supplied with it. I think it is better to allow you to make your own choice of vaporizers and batteries rather than charge for something you may not want.
There’s not really a great deal I can add to Ian’s own summary, beyond my own opinion which is pretty easy to ascertain from the following video. I would add though that having met Ian and understood a bit about him and his philosophy on e-cigs, that he deserves to sell tons of these things, and I can’t see me parting with mine. Ever!
I just received my Touchwood 18650 today. It’s really brilliant. Nice, sleek design and after trying it with both 2x 18350 and 1x 18650, I’ve decided that nothing like high voltage for this mod. Question: When using a Short Stop, should I place it down by the spring when stacking or up by the battery entry? I’m only asking for clarification. Thanks much – R
